We are asked quite a bit about the importance of play and art in our classrooms. The truth of the matter is that art is much more than a memory to hold on your fridge. It is vital to developing skills for your child starting at an early age. Here at Southern Hills we have art starting as early at our Lil' Critter class. Our teachers understand the importance of having art every day. They strive to make art child-led; meaning, we aren't just painting their hand and sending home a hand print. Although we understand every parent loves memories of their child's hand-print, we also understand our families are trusting us to come alongside them in helping their child develop necessary skills at an early age. Therefore, our students get to paint, draw, cut and play with play dough or slime daily. Sometimes art doesn't look "perfect," but it is perfect for their child's development to be messy, out of the lines and even torn at times. Please take the time to read the following article to explain more the importance of play and art in fine motor development in early childhood and how this is being impended on in today's society.
